Wellness Travel Checklist

Travel should leave you restored, not wrecked. In midlife, a little intention before, during, and after a trip makes the difference between coming home depleted and coming home genuinely renewed. Use this checklist to support your body and nervous system through every phase of the journey.

Before You Go

  • Ease your sleep schedule toward your destination time a few days early
  • Front-load rest so you leave less depleted than usual
  • Pack layers for temperature swings and hot flashes
  • Bring your key supports: any supplements, a refillable water bottle, an eye mask, and earplugs
  • Plan an unhurried first day rather than a packed arrival

While You Are There

  • Get morning light early to reset your rhythm in a new time zone
  • Hydrate more than you think you need, especially when flying
  • Keep meals protein-forward and steady to avoid energy crashes
  • Move gently and daily: walk, stretch, swim, explore at an easy pace
  • Protect one quiet window each day for genuine rest
  • Favor calm over cramming, and leave room for spontaneity

For Better Sleep on the Road

  • Recreate a simple wind-down, even a short version of the one you use at home
  • Keep the room cool and dark, and travel with an eye mask and earplugs
  • Limit late caffeine and heavy alcohol, which fragment sleep
  • Give yourself grace for the first night or two in a new place

When You Return

  • Build in a buffer day before real life resumes if you can
  • Get outside in daylight to reset your clock
  • Ease back into movement and normal routines
  • Notice what felt restorative and carry one or two of those practices forward

The Bigger Idea

This is the thinking behind every Restorative Journey I plan: a trip designed around how you want to feel, with the pacing, sleep, nourishment, and rhythm handled so restoration is built in rather than left to chance. A great journey does not just show you somewhere beautiful. It sends you home steadier than you left.
