A More Intentional Morocco: Where to Go Based on How You Travel
Morocco has a way of staying on your mind. It is one of the world’s most captivating destinations, offering a rare balance of ancient and modern, sensory and serene, familiar and completely new. Approached with a little intention, it becomes less of a checklist and more of an experience.
A note on timing
Morocco rewards you year-round, but it helps to know what you are traveling into. During Ramadan, many locals fast from sunrise to sunset, so shops and museums may keep restricted hours and service can feel slower, which can affect tours and logistics. Where to go, based on how you travel
Part of experiencing Morocco well is choosing the right base for who you are. Here is how I think about it, and you can go deeper in my guide to Morocco’s best places to visit.
Marrakech, for the tastemaker. The vibrant cultural heart of the country, always buzzing with new galleries, concept stores, and chef-led dining. If you love creative energy, wandering the medina, discovering artisan workshops, sipping mint tea on a riad rooftop, and ending the day with a design-forward dinner, Marrakech is for you. It also makes a wonderful first taste of Morocco.
Fez, for the cultural purist. The country’s spiritual and intellectual soul, made for history lovers and the endlessly curious. Its ancient medina rewards slow, deep exploration, and it pairs beautifully with a return trip or a longer itinerary.
The Sahara, for the dreamer. Out in the dunes the pace changes completely. Sunset camel rides, al fresco dinners under the stars, and quiet mornings with stellar views make the desert feel like another world.
Casablanca, for the urban connector. Morocco’s modern metropolis and main international gateway. It warrants only a brief visit, but if you carve out the time, do not miss the iconic Hassan II Mosque set dramatically over the Atlantic.

If not Morocco
If Morocco is not calling you just yet, consider Oman. Often called the land of a thousand forts, it is a beautiful alternative if you have already seen Morocco or want something similar but even more off the beaten path.
